Science vs

Blood of Zeus

While Hephaestus’s automatons likely operate on sheer divine power, an automaton is any machine that operates mostly on its own in a predetermined sequence. They can be as simple as a cuckoo clock or complex enough to imitate humans, such as those used in theme parks.

All robots are automatons, but not all automatons are robots. Robots are enabled by algorithms to make decisions, while simpler automatons just repeat the same sequence of actions over and over. Therefore, Hephaestus’s automatons are closer to robots than to simple automatons, though they are not called that because the term is relatively new.
